Hannah James

Ceramics, London

Hannah James completed a BA in photography before gravitating towards ceramics. In 2010 she was recognised as an up-and-coming ceramicist by Craft Central, who selected her for Craft London: Exhibition of Emerging New Talent, a group showcase of new work by London-based ‘design stars of the future’. She currently assists Edmund de Waal in his south London studio.

Hannah makes simple hand-thrown porcelain vessels with an aim to give each piece a sense of stillness so that her work sits quietly together. She is fascinated by the delicacy and hardness of porcelain: ‘My pots have a naïve, pure quality reminiscent of something new born. Each piece bares the faint trace of something hand-made; I like to play with the porcelain on the wheel until the rim tears to reveal the delicate but strong qualities of the clay. I love the colour and texture of naked porcelain so I fire some of my pots unglazed.’
