Stuart Dawson

Painting, West Yorkshire

Stuart Dawson was born in Rochdale and is based at Dean Clough Studios in Halifax. Since graduating from the Royal College of Art in 1983, Stuart has been primarily concerned with studio practice - with drawing and painting central to his ongoing exploration of pictorial space. Stuart employs colour, line and weight within a deliberately limited vocabulary, and has exhibited at the RCA, the Royal Academy and Oxford Museum of Modern Art.

These paintings were first exhibited in 2010 in York Minster, and take their inspiration from architectural details within the cathedral, such as tracery from the East window and the octagonal plan of the Chapter House. ‘Architectural vocabulary has played a major part in the way churches are read. The vocabulary of the painter is developed in different ways, but both respond to and reflect the landscape in which they exist.’
