Jonathan Newdick

Sculpture, York

Elected a member of the Royal British Society of Sculptors in 2004, Jonathan Newdick carves in wood and stone, occasionally casting in bronze. In this new body of work created for Abstraction, Jonathan explores how charring hardwoods can reveal the underlying structures and tensions within the original, organic material. The work expresses his continuing preoccupation with the nature of materials, and the landscape from which they originate.

‘I want to express through the object the energy that goes beyond the material limits, If I can raise someone’s awareness of that uniqueness of material, nature and our own physical relationship to it, then sculpture is doing its job.’
