Ceramics, Stoke-on-Trent

Kevin Millward runs his own pottery near Stoke-on-Trent. His current work is inspired by thrown and turned industrial cream ware forms of the 18th and 19th century. 'I have chosen to use a cream earthenware body that is notoriously difficult to throw due to its lack of plasticity. However, its fired surface qualities draw me to it over and over again. For me, the speed and precision of the throwing are essential, as the clay has a very short working time. The imparting of the surface textures enhance tensions in the thrown forms...A high level of shine from the lead based glaze enhances the relationship between line and form, revealing the surface tension, while enhancing its smoothness and freshness.’
